Meet Our Leaders


Xavier Helgesen
CEO & Co-founder

A veteran entrepreneur, Xavier founded two million-dollar businesses in his 20’s, including Better World Books, a profitable social venture with $60M in revenue selling books online to fund literacy. In 2009, he was recognized as the Best Social Entrepreneur by Businessweek and given the Fast Company Social Capitalist award. Xavier holds an MBA from Oxford Saïd Business School, which he attended on a Skoll Scholarship, and a BA (honors) from the University of Notre Dame.

Erica Mackey
COO & Co-founder

Erica has over ten years of operating experience in sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to Off Grid Electric, she served as Executive Director for Support for International Change (SIC), a rural health service provider in East Africa. In 2012, she was recognized by Forbes as one of “30 under 30 Social Entrepreneurs.” She holds an MBA and Skoll Associate Fellowship from Oxford Saïd Business School, where she co-founded the Oxford Women’s Leadership Community, and a Bachelors degree in Ecology from UCLA.

Joshua Pierce
CTO & Co-founder

Joshua has 15 years experience in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. In 2007, he founded Pierce Consulting before serving as Director of Technical Services at RHA Inc. where he managed energy projects for the US Department of Energy, the State of California, and large investor-owned utilities. He was a 2012 Rainer Arnhold Fellow. Joshua has a degree in Construction Management and Building Science from Cal State-Chico, post-graduate education at UCLA.

Bill Lenihan, CFO & Head of Business Operations

Bill is an accomplished senior executive with a strong track record of improving companies and building enterprise value. He has a depth of experience across industries (technology, consumer, industrial, services) and functional areas. Prior to Off Grid Electric, Bill held roles at Switch Lighting, as well Calera Capital (formerly Fremont Partners), Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse First Boston. Bill holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA (honors) from UCLA.

Thor Muller, CIO 

Thor is a serial entrepreneur having founded five start-ups, including Get Satisfaction, a pioneering service connecting customers to products and brands. Prior to Off Grid Electric, he served as Get Satisfaction’s original CEO and later as its CTO, growing the business to serve over 70,000 customer communities. In 2012, he published a New York Times bestselling book, "Get Lucky: How to Put Planned Serendipity to Work for You and Your Business.” Thor holds a BA from the University of Iowa.

Off Grid Electric is committed to complying with all applicable laws and best corporate governance practices, wherever we operate.  It is a core aspect of our mission to act with integrity in all of our operations.  The Board of Directors of Off Grid Electric expects all employees to comply with both the letter and spirit of the law and governance codes.

Off Grid Electric affirms that will not pay or procure the payment of a bribe or unlawful fee to encourage the proper performance of a task or one which is intended or likely to compromise the integrity of another.  We will not accept any payment, gift or inducement from a third party which is intended to compromise our own integrity.

Off Grid Electric has communicated this policy to all its employees, to ensure that its commitment to integrity and legal compliance is followed.  When contracting with a third party we will insist that they acknowledge our commitment to good governance and that they in turn require the same high standards of those they engage.
